Saving Children's Lives

Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) collects, analyzes, and shares evidence to prevent child mortality in regions where it is highest.

Nearly five million children under the age of 5 died worldwide in 2022

Gaps in disease surveillance, death registries, and diagnostic testing often obscure specific causes of death, particularly in low-resource countries or geographies where child mortality rates are highest. CHAMPS engages locally, nationally, and globally to understand and address the causes of stillbirth, neonatal, and early childhood deaths.

Launched in 2015 with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, CHAMPS surveillance, diagnostics, and results have been empowering parents, communities, partners, and policymakers to save young lives.

Africa and South Asia account for 82% of preventable deaths in children under 5 globally. Investigations across the CHAMPS Network find that:

78%

of stillbirths and 64% of newborn dearths could be prevented with better pregnancy and delivery care.

73%

of infant and early child deaths involve more than one cause. Malnutrition, malaria, pneumonia, and HIV are common.

78%

of newborns die from preterm birth complications, including drug-resistant infections.
