Global Health Institute Field Scholars Nutrition and Global Health in the Republic of Georgia Shelley Adamik, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing/Rollins School of Public Health This group of students worked on a project that examined global nutritional issues as they relate to health and disease integrating socioeconomic, political, and environmental factors in the Republic of Georgia. During their field work, students participated in an assessment, intervention, and evaluation of a nutrition problem identified by in-country partners, with their target population being women and children in urban and rural areas of the Republic of Georgia.. Ms. Adamik conducted a public health survey to determine the nutritional status of women and children in the Republic of Georgia. She collected anthropometric and biological data in the field and provided nutritional education to the target population. Ms. Margolis and Ms. Schaffner conducted clinical assessments of the nutritional status of women and children in both rural and urban areas of the Republic of Georgia, which aided the team in the common goal of treatment and prevention. Participation in the project allowed them to learn specific data collection and assessment methodologies and identify how certain infectious diseases prevalent in the Republic of Georgia might manifest themselves with nutritional deficiency. Ms. Wong conducted nutritional assessments on children in urban and rural areas and compared the prevalence of malnutrition in rural areas among children under five to rates for children in urban areas through a cross-sectional study.
