Global Health Institute Field Scholars Women, the Media, and Health in Ghana Khalilah Liptrot, Master of Divinity Program, Candler School of Theology Ms. Liptrot is a divinity student at Emory's Candler School of Theology. She has a background in broadcast journalism and is interested in exploring the effects of media images on the mental health and well being of African women. During her global health field scholar experience, she examined the gender constructions and images portrayed in films, documentaries, videos, and other cultural productions that are currently being shown in churches and communities in Dansoman and Accra, Ghana. Ms. Liptrot also interviewed and interacted with members of the local community to explore how these media images are affecting them and their mental health. Her global health field scholars work is part of a directed study with Dr. Emmanuel Lartey, a native of Ghana and an accomplished scholar in intercultural pastoral care and counseling. By contributing to the understanding of the effects of media on the mental health of people in a low-resource country, this project will help inform public health education practitioners as they develop programs for their target populations.
