Global Health Institute Field Scholars International Rotation in Lusaka, Zambia with the Rwanda-Zambia HIV Research Group Jamie Ellingwood, Emory Physician Assistant Program, Emory University School of Medicine Jamie Ellingwood, a physician assistant student at the Emory University School of Medicine, worked with the Rwanda-Zambia HIV Research Group (RZHRG), whose principal research objectives are to uncover factors relating to HIV risk and transmission, to gain a better understanding of how to prevent the spread of HIV, and to improve the quality of life among HIV infected African adults. During Ms. Ellingwood's field experience, she provided direct medical care and counseling to HIV-positive patients in an area where resources are limited and the number of physicians per capita (11.6/100,000) is inferior to that of surrounding countries. Through her clinical interactions, she collected data that will be used in longitudinal studies to better assess and perfect treatment and counseling needed to combat HIV/AIDS worldwide. By providing direct operational support for the RZHRG, she contributed to an effort that is having a positive impact on HIV on a global scale.
