International Rotation in Kigali, Rwanda with the Rwanda-Zambia HIV Research Group

Jeri Sumitani, Emory Physician Assistant Program, Emory University School of Medicine

Jeri Sumitani, a physician assistant student at the Emory University School of Medicine, worked with the Rwanda-Zambia HIV Research Group (RZHRG), whose principal research objectives are to uncover factors relating to HIV risk and transmission, to gain a better understanding of how to prevent the spread of HIV, and to improve the quality of life among HIV-infected African adults. During Ms. Sumitani's field experience, she was assigned to the RZHRG's outpatient clinic and also participated in grand rounds on the infectious disease wards at a regional university teaching hospital. She was able to exchange evidence-based medicine guidelines from the United States with infectious disease specialists from Kigali while learning how the group works to manage the HIV/AIDS epidemic from a public health perspective with limited resources. Data that she collected and patients she managed during her field experience directly support the ongoing research initiatives of RZHRG.
