Needs Assessment of Family Planning Methods in the Colombian & Brazilian Border Amazon Region: A Qualitative Approach

Francisco S. Palomeque-Rodriguez, Rollins School of Public Health

In collaboration with Clinica Leticia, a non-governmental organization (NGO) providing health services to the neighboring towns of Leticia, Colombia and Tabatinga, Brazil, Mr. Palomeque-Rodriguez conducted a needs assessment of family planning methods among reproductive aged women in these two areas of Colombia and Brazil. Mr. Palomeque-Rodriguez, a graduate student in the Hubert Department of Global Health at the Rollins School of Public Health, coordinated the qualitative research component of the needs assessment. He trained field assistants in qualitative research methods, recruited study participants, and conducted data entry and analysis. His goals for conducting this project were to gain experience using qualitative research methods in the field, gain general experience with community-based research, collaborate with an in-country NGO, and learn more about Amazonian groups and their family planning methods.
