Social Networks and Use of Skilled Birth Attendants: A Preliminary Study
in Matlab, Bangladesh

Joyce Edmonds, RN, MPH, Doctoral Fellow, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing/Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

Ms. Edmonds is a doctoral fellow at the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing and works with the School's Center for Research on Maternal and Newborn Survival. As a Global Health Institute Scholar, she conducted a preliminary ethnographic research study to identify and describe the decision making criteria and process involved in the choice of women's birth attendants in Bangladesh. She partnered with the International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh, and the Matlab Health Service Area. A focus of her study was uncovering information on social network members' involvement in women's decision making processes.
