Faculty Distinction Fund Awardee Dr. Markowitz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at Emory College. Prior to joining Emory's faculty, she was a tenured associate professor of economics at Rutgers University, Newark campus. Her specialty is applied microeconomics and health economics, and she focuses much of her research on economic analyses of healthy and unhealthy behaviors. She has published peer-reviewed articles on the health and economic impacts of issues such as smoking, alcohol abuse, marijuana use, obesity, high-risk sexual behavior, gun violence, and the use of anti-depressant medications. While at Rutgers, she served as associate director of the Blanche and Irwin Lerner Center for Pharmaceutical Management Studies, director of Graduate Studies in Economics, and was a member of the Center for Global Change. She is also a research associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research, a group of distinguished economics scholars that includes 30 Nobel Prize winners. In addition to her research, Dr. Markowitz has also been recognized for her excellent teaching and mentoring skills. Dr. Markowitz received her doctorate in economics from the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York and her masters in economics from Hunter College.
