Improving Recognition of and Initial Response to Prolonged/Obstructed Labor and Birth Asphyxia in Settings Characterized by Homebirth with Unskilled Attendants: A Multi-Site Study and Academic Partnership Development Project

Emory University’s Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing is partnering with the International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research in Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) to conduct a research and training project that aims to reduce maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity resulting from life-threatening complications in low-resource settings characterized by home birth with unskilled attendants. This project builds upon an existing collaboration that the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing’s Center for Research on Maternal and Newborn Survival has with the ICDDR,B. It also brings in new partners including Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health and two internationally recognized Bangladeshi non-governmental organizations, the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC), and the LAMB Integrated Rural Health and Development/World Mission Prayer League.

This partnership will work to improve existing and develop new community-based strategies and interventions designed to reduce the estimated 529,000 maternal deaths and 4 million neonatal deaths that occur annually due to complications arising during home births. The project will employ quantitative and qualitative research strategies to identify culturally specific norms and patterns of behavior and decision making that will then lead to the design, implementation, and evaluation of innovative strategies and interventions to improve the recognition of and response to life-threatening birth complications. The project involves an interdisciplinary approach that provides training opportunities for Emory students and for junior scientists at the international partner institutions in the quest to achieve goals and actively engage them in the global imperative to reduce maternal and newborn death and disability.
