Consortium on Avian Influenza Control: An International Partnership on H5N1 Influenza Vaccine Development

This consortium seeks to establish a solid partnership between the Emory University School of Medicine’s Center of Excellence for Influenza Research and Surveillance (CEIRS) and the Harbin Veterinary Research Institute (HVRI), a leading Chinese institute specializing in avian influenza surveillance. The overarching purpose of the consortium will be to conduct studies that will lead to the development of a universal vaccine against infection by different H5N1 avian influenza strains.  The specific objectives of the consortium are to:

  • Develop collaborative research projects;
  • Exchange reference reagents and standardized methods for virological, immunological, and pathogenesis studies; and
  • Exchange personnel for training in animal influenza virology, immunology, and pathogenesis studies.
Emory will provide training to visiting scientists from HVRI in molecular virology and immunology studies, while HVRI will provide training to Emory researchers in avian influenza field surveillance and viral pathogenesis studies. Because the Emory CEIRS and HVRI focus on different research topics, with Emory concentrating on immunology and host response and HVRI focused on avian influenza surveillance and pathogenesis, they will complement each other in their collaborative efforts to better prepare for a potential new avian influenza pandemic.
