Democracy Needs Leaders Who Are Prepared to Serve the People

Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge, MS, is a current Member of Parliament of the Republic of South Africa. She has also served in the prestigious government roles of Deputy Minister of Health and Deputy Minister of Defense in President Thabo Mbeki's administration. In these roles, she has led efforts to stem the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa as well as promoted the goal of South Africa's military serving primarily as peacekeeping forces in the region. Ms. Madlala-Routledge was dismissed from her post as Deputy Minister of Health by President Mbeki, following an "unauthorized trip" to an AIDS Vaccine Conference in Spain and her speaking out about poor conditions at Frere Maternity Hospital, which has a very high rate of infant mortality. There was public outcry at her dismissal and huge support for her integrity and position on HIV/AIDS. This was reported in local and international media.

While a Distinguished Visiting Fellow of the Emory Global Health Institute, Ms. Madlala-Routledge gave this lecture on Wednesday, April 23, 2008. The lecture was open to the public.
