Lisa A. Tedesco, PhD

Lisa A. Tedesco, PhDLisa Tedesco is Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and vice-provost for academic affairs-graduate studies at Emory University. She is also a professor of behavioral sciences and health education at Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health.

Prior to coming to Emory, Dean Tedesco served in a number of academic leadership roles. From 1981 to 1992 she was a faculty member at the State University of New York at Buffalo. In 1992, she joined the University of Michigan as associate dean of its School of Dentistry. In 1998, she was named university secretary and vice president, and in 2001, she served as the University’s interim provost. During her dental school tenure, the School implemented a doctoral program and instituted significant changes in curriculum, pedagogy, and interdisciplinary research. As vice president and secretary, she was the liaison officer for the University’s Board of Regents, responsible for facilitation, coordination, and management of policy matters and communications pertaining to the board, the president, and the executive officers of the University. While interim provost, she worked with the deans of 18 schools and colleges to advance important academic initiatives and budget developments.

Dr. Tedesco is the author of 69 peer-reviewed articles, one book, two monographs, and 12 book chapters. A former president of the American Association of Dental Schools, she is widely known as a social science health educator concerned with health disparities, curriculum reform, and diversity in the healthcare workforce. She serves on an Institute of Medicine committee addressing workforce diversity and is a member of the Sullivan Alliance to Transform America’s Health Professions. She has held grants from the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the National Institute of Dental Research, and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, among other agencies. She is an honorary member of the American Dental Association, the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and the winner of the 2002 University of Michigan Sarah Goddard Power Award for distinguished leadership and sustained service on behalf of women.
