Claire E. Sterk, PhD

Claire E. Sterk, PhDClaire Sterk is Senior Vice Provost for Academic Planning and Faculty Development and Charles Howard Candler Professor of Public health. She holds joint appointments in the Departments of Anthropology, Sociology, and Women’s Studies. Prior to her current position, she was professor and chair of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Health Education at Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health as well as the School’s associate dean for research. In her current role, her primary responsibilities are to coordinate academic planning and to manage faculty development activities. Her office also leads the Emory Strategic Plan initiative on strengthening faculty distinction, including its faculty distinction fund and the associated equipment fund. Other duties include serving as a liaison between the Provost’s Office and the University Senate and Faculty Council, coordinating faculty nominations and selections for prestigious professional awards, and participating in the review of promotion and tenure procedures.

Dr. Sterk’s research interests are addiction/mental health and HIV/AIDS, with a focus on women’s issues, health disparities, and community-based behavioral interventions. She is interested in the intersection between the individual, community, and larger societal factors. She has authored three books and more than 100 articles and book chapters. She serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Ethnicity and Substance Abuse and the Journal of Drug Issues. Dr. Sterk is also a member of the National Advisory Council to the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health. She is a fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology, was the 1999 recipient of the Thomas F. Seller, Jr., Award, and was appointed as the Roselyn Carter Fellow in Public Policy from 2003-2006. She was also the 2002 winner of the Mary Anne Morgan Lecturer in Women’s Health, a 2003 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer, and in 2000 she was included in Emory’s Great Teachers Lecture Series.
